In addition, <u>IPC-6013B: Qualification and Performance Specification for Flexible Printed Boards</u> is currently in committee for update and revision. These documents represent the workmanship and acceptability requirements for the vast majority of printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication processes and articles.</p> <p>The IPC Professional Training and Certification Program offers a course in IPC-A-600 under the same policies and procedures as IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001. The EMPF can provide training at both the Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) and Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) levels. Although the courses are administered in slightly different manners - the CIT course is a complete course on the document and the CIS course allows the student to choose only the necessary topics of instruction - each course offers training and certification on the same information contained within the standard.</p> <p>Each course begins with coverage of the IPC Professional Training Policies and Procedures to ensure the students understand their roles and responsibilities as either a CIT or CIS under the program. This session introduces the student to the different types of certifications that can be attained, the manner in which they are each achieved, their duration, as well as the portability of the IPC certificates.</p> <p>The first session continues with the first chapter of IPC-A-600H which defines the scope and purpose of the standard. The document defines two types of conditions, "Externally Observable Characteristics" and "Internally Observable Characteristics." The student is taught the three classes of production, the differences between each class, and how to determine and apply the appropriate class. The levels of acceptance and the order of precedence of various types of documents that may define requirements are introduced. Finally, the specifics of the inspection process such as the proper magnification levels and the use of the dimensions provided in the standard are discussed.</p> <p>For CIS students, the first session represents the mandatory Module 1 which must be completed by all CIS candidates prior to completion of any optional modules. CIT students continue on to the second session and any CIS student that wishes to be certified in the requirements from chapter 2 can continue as well.</p> <p>The second session covers the requirements from the second chapter, "Externally Observable Characteristics." Topics such as blisters and delamination, board edge conditions (Figure 6-1), plating and final coating voids, marking, solder mask coverage, and copper pattern definition requirements are provided. Each requirement is correlated to the identical requirement found in IPC-6012 and/or IPC-6013 to allow the student to understand the relationship between the acceptance standard (IPC-A-600) and the related performance specification (IPC-6012 for rigid boards and IPC-6013 for flexible boards). The second session provides the complete information for the optional Module 2 of the CIS certification.</p> <p align="center"><img src="images/fig6-1.gif"></p> <p>The third topic, "Internally Observable Characteristics," provides instruction on chapter 3 and is required for all CIT students and is the optional Module 3 for CIS students. Topics in this session include laminate voids, etchback and smear removal, internal annular ring requirements, plated through hole cracks (Figure 6-2) and voids, fill of vias and cap plating of filled holes, and punched hole requirements. As in the previous session, each requirement is correlated to the appropriate requirement found in IPC-6012 and/or IPC-6013.</p> <p align="center"><img src="images/fig6-2.gif"></p> <p>The final session covers the requirements found in chapters 4 and 5 and is required for all CIT students and is the optional Module 4 for CIS students. This session provides instruction on the requirements for special printed board types, such as flexible and rigid-flex circuits, metal core boards, and flush printed circuits. Topics in this session include adhesive squeeze out on flexible circuits, stiffener bonding, laminate integrity for flexible and rigid-flex substrates, edge condition for flexible circuits (Figure 6-3), silver film integrity for shielded flexible circuits, insulation thickness for metal core boards, plating requirements for metal core boards with plating to the core, and flushness of conductors on flush printed boards. These requirements are correlated to the appropriate performance specification (IPC-6012 and/or IPC-6013 as applicable). Also presented are basic cleanliness and solderability requirements found in chapter 5.</p> <p align="center"><img src="images/fig6-3.gif"></p> <p>CIS students are required to complete written exams for each module; CIT students are required to complete comprehensive written tests at the end of the course. With the release of training material for the new revision of the IPC-A-600, the IPC has undertaken a significant revision of the training program materials. In addition to the requirements from the applicable performance specifications, the test materials will be markedly different to those from previous programs. The test will now have a visual focus, with images or illustrations used to demonstrate various conditions. These questions will expect the student to locate the appropriate requirement and to interpret the condition provided in the illustration to determine the acceptability of the condition. These test questions are expected to enhance the students understanding of the standard as well as ensure the students are able to apply the criteria appropriately in a real-world situation.</p> <p>The EMPF can provide training and certification at the CIT or CIS level. CIT courses are regularly scheduled at the EMPF facility and CIT and CIS courses can be provided at any location. Contact the EMPF Registrar at 610.362.1295 or at registrar@empf.org for information about the 2011 course schedule to hold a custom class at your location.</p> <p class="body_text"><img src="../../archive/updated/jfullerton.gif"></p> </div> </td> <!-- InstanceEndEditable --> </tr> <tr> </tr> </table> <br> <table width="100%" border="0"> <tr> <td colspan="2"><div align="center"> <p><em>The EMPF is a U.S. Navy-sponsored National Electronics Manufacturing Center of Excellence focused on the development,<br> application, and transfer of new electronics manufacturing technology by partnering with industry,<br> academia, and government centers and laboratories in the U.S</em></p> </div></td> </tr> <tr> <td class="footer">ACI Technologies, Inc - - <a href="http://www.aciusa.org">www.aciusa.org</a> - - (610)362-1200</td> <td><div align="right"><a href="http://www.onr.navy.mil/Science-Technology/Directorates/Transition/Manufacturing-ManTech.aspx"><img src="http://www.empf.org/empfasis/archive/images/mantech.gif" width="144" height="42" border="0"></a></div></td> </tr> </table> <div align="right"> <!-- Start of StatCounter Code --> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> var sc_project=350643; var sc_partition=1; </script> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://www.statcounter.com/counter/counter.js"></script> <noscript> <a href="http://www.statcounter.com/free_hit_counter.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://c2.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=350643&amp;amp;java=0" alt="hit counter" border="0"></a> </noscript> <a href="http://www.empf.org/sitemap.htm"><em>[site map] </em></a> <!-- End of StatCounter Code --> <!-- Start of StatCounter Code --> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> var sc_project=1902214; var sc_invisible=1; var sc_partition=17; var sc_security="759b802c"; </script> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://www.statcounter.com/counter/counter.js"></script><noscript><a href="http://www.statcounter.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://c18.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=1902214&java=0&security=759b802c&invisible=1" alt="website statistics" border="0"></a> </noscript> <!-- End of StatCounter Code --> </div> </body> <!-- InstanceEnd --></html>
